Beloved community: movement teacher Sophie Redman
Sophie Redman is a Helsinki based movement teacher, whose passion for somatic motion runs in her blood. A lifelong student of her mother, a New York born modern dancer, Sophie’s classes are a fusion of her mother’s legacy and the many somatic approaches Sophie has integrated over the years teaching.
Sophie owns and runs the Sweet Spot Studio, a stunning gem in the heart of Kaartinkaupunki, where she and other teachers hold classes for the body, mind & soul.
Hello Sophie! Who are you and how are you?
I'm Sophie Redman, movement teacher and owner of Sweet Spot Studio near Kasarmitori, in Helsinki. I am just starting my second season at my own studio, I’m excited and grateful for that.
What has brought you here; to where you are right now in your life/journey?
I was trained by my mother, Janice Redman, who was originally a modern dancer from New York. She developed a method called Bodyflow, using her vast experience in dance, yoga, pilates and Alexander technique. I have been teaching since I was 16 and the method has evolved during the years. Teaching is like home to me. I am diving deeper into studying somatic therapy, so that has been a big leap, yet one that feels very natural.
What does healing mean to you, and how do you incorporate it into your life (your work as a teacher/life as a mother)?
Healing to me is the ability to be in the present moment, comfortable in your body and with who you are. It is the ability to sit with your feelings.
Movement has always been a lifeline for me, a way for me to move heavy thoughts and things through my body. I hope I am able to bring this aspect to each class I teach.
What inspires you; in life, work, the world?
I am inspired by the women around me, who are both mothering and creating at the same time, without the two being in conflict.
What are some of the somatic practices you love for your body & mind, and why?
I love Qigong and Kundalini yoga, both of which have had an impact on my work. Both modalities feel like pure magic, they epitomise balance for me - the sensation of feeling strong and soft at the same time.
Also, I have been working a lot with a tool called fascia flossing, helping students (and myself) soften dense tissue to make more space in their bodies.
What are you dreaming about for the future, on a personal and communal level?
I am forming a weekly women's group this fall. I can sense a strong need for community, connection and healing. This service is what I believe I am on this earth for.
